From Transition to Transformation: Strengthening Operations & Leadership in a Surgical Group

CLIENT PROFILE

A large independent board-certified multi-specialty surgical group based in the Midwest providing trauma, acute surgical care, and the region’s only renal transplantation group in their market.

THE CLIENT ISSUE

Following the retirement of a long-standing board president and lead physician, along with impending departures within the operational management leadership team, physicians within this sizable surgical group found themselves curiously questioning things including potential for overall practice performance, relative efficiency in current state operational activity effectiveness of revenue cycle execution, and ideal approach to ongoing management of administrative functions.

THE MMG SOLUTION

MMG collaborated with the leadership team and shareholders in execution of a comprehensive operational, financial, and revenue cycle diagnostic evaluation designed to influence the organization’s planning process and realized outcomes.

The engagement scope included a high-level operational and financial overview of areas including, but not limited to, current financial plan and performance, policies and protocols, staffing and functional roles and responsibilities, and organizational structure. The review process included generation and review of data and interviews to gain perspectives of leaders, clinical providers, and support staff.

The MMG team met with leadership, clinical providers, and support staff to understand the areas affecting each section of the practice. Working with the leadership team, MMG identified opportunities inefficiencies while ensuring continuity of essential patient services within the region. Additionally, MMG established data driven key performance metrics to support ongoing provider management and productivity efficiencies.

THE OUTCOME

MMG delivered more than 25 different recommendations to the surgical group aimed at turning challenges in areas including workflow and process inefficiencies, staff communication gaps, technology limitations, staffing and training challenges, management oversight, and patient experience into quantifiable opportunity.

In addition, MMG provided the surgical group with detailed productivity and coding analyses that benchmarked current state performance against that of their peers. Having identified more than $200,000 in annual cash flow opportunity from this alone, MMG has been engaged to assist in implementing these and other recommendations.
